AI Needs Its Bitcoin Moment

2 min read

I think AI needs a decentralized inference network, built on the same fundamental principles as Bitcoin.

A permissionless network where anyone can plug in a GPU, contribute inference, and get paid in crypto. And anyone who needs AI — individuals, companies, or autonomous agents — can tap into that compute through a common API.

No central provider = no permission required, resulting in a network that democratizes access to intelligence on tap, without gatekeepers.

Why do we need this? Because the last remaining moats in AI are HARDWARE and POLITICS.

Software isn't a real moat anymore, and I don't think model quality will stay a moat for much longer either. Open models are closing the gap with the frontier labs, training techniques spread, breakthroughs get replicated — intelligence itself is becoming a commodity.

But the hardware you need to run that intelligence is still expensive and concentrated in very few hands. So is the political power to decide who gets access, which models can run, and under what conditions.

A decentralized inference network solves both. It lets independent GPU owners and data centers actually participate in the AI economy, instead of leaving inference to a handful of corporations. And it gives us a real alternative to centralized control over intelligence.

The network would run open models, reward useful compute with its own token, and govern model upgrades collectively.

Bitcoin proved that a global network of economically incentivized strangers can run a monetary system without a central authority. AI needs the same thing.

If intelligence is becoming a fundamental resource of modern civilization — and I think it is — then access to it shouldn't depend on who owns the biggest data centers, or who holds political power over them.
